While I don't harbor many regrets, if I were to pinpoint one, it would be not showing my work at the time of its creation. Inspiration often strikes swiftly, and any hindrance (documentation) to continuing the creative process is usually unwelcome. Designers face a particular challenge in this regard, as a job rarely aligns with clients going public with the work. Projects often linger in limbo, and by the time they are "released," I've already moved on, immersed in a different project and creative space. This year, I've fully seen the importance of displaying previous projects as in-depth case studies—a more impactful approach that provides a deeper perspective and intentionality. It's akin to reinventing the work and, in some ways, oneself.
The primary motivation for writing this piece is to share my journey and show the process that led me here. It's somewhat impossible to explain as it's many steps/ideas that add up. As previously mentioned, it revolved around envisioning my sites as satellites that collectively form a universe.
It all began with my FOG site. Having just completed this book, I felt compelled to document all 150-something pages through a dedicated website. The process of creating this site reignited my love for websites, sparking energy to develop more of these web satellites. It involved not only formulating a larger plan, with cinaassociates.com as the hub, but also determining the structure, functionality, and aesthetics of the site. A concept I embraced years ago was to build the frame and ship it modestly while observing its evolution over time. Each new satellite expanded the world, providing fresh content for promotion. The old metamorphosed into the new.
Another guiding principle I adhere to is the importance of everything being in "the right place." This maintains harmony, creating a seamless flow for other ideas and projects to exist with the others. The key is having faith in the work, at the very least as process, and then moving forward. If you don’t have that, you have to find out why.
The truth is that ideas take time to grow, and figuring out how to present them takes time and thought. One of the things I am doing here is trying to figure out what (and why) I have done things in the past so I can also figure out the future. It’s all part of the renewable ecosystem.
Hopefully, my writing helped you this year, that was also my desire. See you next year, thanks for reading, and sharing.
